Sharper memory

A large-scale study of over 16 000 women showed that consuming berries at least once weekly may slow “age-related memory loss”.

WebMD reported that “When researchers compared women who ate the most blueberries and strawberries to those who ate the fewest, they found that those who ate the most had a slower rate of developing memory problems. The difference was equal to about two-and-a-half years of aging.”

Based on previous studies done on mice, the results have suggested that berries may protect Alzheimer’s patients from memory declines. The superfood contains anthocyanins, a type of antioxidant compound that can stimulate blood flow to the brain, particularly in the areas of the brain that are responsible for memory and learning.

 

Improved heart health

A study on middle-aged subjects showed that “eating just under a cup of mixed berries daily for eight weeks was associated with increased levels of “good” HDL cholesterol and lowered blood pressure”. These are factors that will benefit cardiovascular health.

In addition, a Harvard study on young adult women revealed that consumption of berries improved heart health. The study “showed heart health benefits in participants who consumed at least three servings of blueberries and strawberries per week”.

Researchers believe that it is the anthocyanins that are responsible for the benefits.

 

Prevent disease

In an issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, nutrition scientists ranked berries and beans as the foods with the most antioxidants. With a high antioxidant content, their ability to subdue free radicals makes berries a powerful weapon against a variety of diseases, from allergies to arthritis.

Studies have also shown that they “have anticancer effects by inhibiting tumour growth and decreasing inflammation in the body”, suggesting that they might be the natural solution to preventing cancer.
